Le Canada retarde le progrès à la conférence Rio+20

Rio De Janeiro, le 18 juin 2012 – Plus de 100 dirigeants gouvernementaux et des fonctionnaires de
haut niveau dont Hilary Clinton, secrétaire d’État des États-Unis et François Hollande, président français
seront présents lors des négociations finales du Sommet de la Terre 2012 aussi connu comme Rio+20.
Cette conférence des Nations Unies sur le développement durable se déroulera à Rio du 20 au 22 juin
prochain.

Des délégués canadiens d’Ensemble vers le Sommet (EVLS) observent actuellement la position
officielle du Canada tout en participant aux négociations. Ensemble vers le Sommet est une initiative
pancanadienne lancée par des jeunes. Au cours des derniers mois, plus de 8000 Canadiens ont été
consultés par cet organisme lors d’une tournée qui s’est déroulée dans l’ensemble du pays. Toutes les
opinions ont été compilées et un rapport a été préparé. Celui-ci a été présenté à la Conférence afin de
donner une voix à la société civile à Rio+20.

Running out of Runway: How an Energy Revolution can stop climate change

I’d like to begin by echoing something Prime Minister Stephen Harper said recently with respect to Europe, but I think it is even more applicable to climate change. He said: “we are running out of runway here”.

It’s a good metaphor. As you are probably aware, the International Energy Agency has warned that if we continue with business-as-usual investments in fossil fuel infrastructure over the next five years, we would lock in such high greenhouse emissions from all those new pipelines, coal plants and inefficient buildings and vehicles that it will be impossible to avoid dangerous levels of global warming.

Youth Call on Canada to End Handouts to Fossil Fuel Companies

Ottawa, ON – Earlier today youth organizers with PowerShift staged a “Subsidies Sweepstakes” across from Parliament Hill. Showing alternative uses of the $1.4 billion in handouts currently being distributed by the government, the action was the launch of campaign to end fossil fuel subsidies in Canada. Organizers distributed ballots for passers-by to enter their choices for the best, better use of $1.4 billion along with an online poll asking people across Canada to think of better ways to spend the money.

IPCC asks Greenhouse Gas Inventories Task Force to develop guidelines

 

Experts at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are to draw up new guidance to enable countries to measure the impact on greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry and changes in land use more accurately.

Des professeurs du Département des sciences biologiques de l'UQAM inquiets de l'attitude du gouvernement fédéral envers la recherche scientifique

Montréal, le 5 juin 2012 – Yves Prairie, professeur au Département des sciences biologiques de l'UQAM et titulaire de la Chaire UNESCO en changements environnementaux à l'échelle du globe et plusieurs autres professeurs de ce Département s'associent au mouvement SAVE ELA qui dénonce l'attitude du gouvernement Harper en matière de recherche scientifique au Canada.
